Photography...capturing beauty for ever.

Beginnings of Photography

The French inventor Nicéphore Niépce in 1825 produced the first permanent photographic image made with a camera that needed an eight-hour exposure. After some more refinements, Niépce in partnership with Louis Daguerre made further developments. After the death of Niépce in 1833 Daguerre continued the work and in 1839 had invented a process called the daguerreotype, a similar process which is still used today for Polaroid photos. By 1840 more developments resulted in the use of a type of negative that could be used to make a positive print. Later George Eastman refined the process and basically this is the technology still used by chemical film cameras today. The first modern colour film was introduced in 1935 by the Eastman Kodak Company and the process used was then further perfected for Agfacolor in 1936. The first digital cameras for consumers (for use with a home computer) appeared in 1994 and a year later a Casio camera was available with a LCD monitor.

From Leo

My very first camera was a simple, fixed-focus camera of which I do not remember the brand name.  At that time I was quite happy to take the usual B&W snapshots and through the years and , like so many of us, via a long succession of cameras with an increasing number of features I finally arrived at the digital camera, a Canon Powershot A60.
I am still quite content to use my present Pentax Optio E10 to take the obligatory snapshots but derive as much pleasure from photographing flowers and plants in our garden, often close-up. But I also like to take those pictures of the unexpected or spontaneous situations of which the photo "Curious" in the gallery below is an example. Photography is just one of my hobbies, I have no training or deep knowledge of the technicalities and more often than not simply use the "point-and-shoot" method and my photographs do not pretend to be anything more than to hopefully please the eye of the viewer.
