Collecting is one of the most popular
activities in the world, a hobby enjoyed by millions of
people. There is not much that can not be a collectable,
anything from buttons to gardening tools to fountain pens
and the limits are set only by the imagination and
determination of the individual. Some items can be acquired
for very little, others are expensive beyond belief. For
whatever reason, collectables are bought and sold but for
many collectors it is just the fun or the thrill of
collecting and many collectors would not dream of ever
parting with an item. A collectable need not be an antique
and even even the most mundane, everyday object can become a
much valued and desirable collectable. Quite often
collectors concentrate their efforts on items that have a
personal significance to them, items that remind them of
their youth or particular periods in their life. Many
collectors regard the money value of the items in their
collection as far less important than the satisfaction of
finding and acquiring that much sought after item that is
still missing from their collection. It is interesting to
note that collecting is the acquisition of specialised items
while hoarding is the purposeless accumulation of items of
endless variety.
Why figurines...?
We have been collecting figurines for about three years now and we are certainly not the only collectors who, when
affordability allows, acquire the item first and foremost simply because "we
like it", because it pleases the eye and agrees with our tastes. At
present there is no particular focus on any one famous make but as time
progresses we endeavour to collect ever more of the older and well known
names and our collection already includes names like Dresden, Royal Doulton,
Royal Albert, Sitzendorf, Wallendorf and others.. We do however have a particular liking for figurines that
we like to label as "companion pieces" and the picture of the chess players
in the gallery below is an attractive example of this. Thus our collection
of figurines does not represent any particular brand name, style, class or
genre but is a mixture of most and just another pleasurable hobby that, next
to our other hobbies and interests, adds to a sense of purpose and
accomplishment.
